The Cross River State Police Command has arrested three suspects linked to the ongoing chieftaincy crisis in Iko-Esai village, Akamkpa Local Government Area. The suspects, identified as Chief Obrt Obia, Chief Elijah Okomison, and Clement Akposi, face charges of murder, arson, malicious damage, and conspiracy.
The crisis worsened when Christian Abakun, 30, was shot and killed by a fellow villager, Sunday David, using a locally made pistol. Two other people were injured and are currently receiving medical care. The violence also led to the destruction of eight buildings, two vehicles, and ten motorcycles.
The suspects and casefile have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) in Calabar for further investigation. The Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, assured the public that those responsible will be prosecuted.
Residents of Iko-Esai and Akamkpa have been urged to provide any useful information and report to the nearest police station or the Police Command Headquarters in Calabar.
The police have pledged to work with other agencies to restore peace and order in the community.
